Volunteers Roles at Intercultural Language Service
Here are some of the roles volunteers may consider to help ILS in its mission. Technical and practical support, along with training will be provided in all cases. The duties and activities of these roles will be negotiated with and closely supported by Centre Coordinator and Director and with the groups of volunteers or members involved. Volunteer Roles
Centre Coordinator
Ensure the smooth daily running of the Centre. Set up the room for the sessions, help organise the study groups, welcome, test and place new learners, supply photocopies to tutors, troubleshoot small issues.
English tutors
Work with clients in a structured way on their language proficiency and intercultural knowledge. Some experience needed; ongoing training provided. (resources and support here: Tutors' Links)
Digital Literacy Tutors
Help our members to become familiar with the online world in Ireland and how to get more out of their phones, tablets or PCs. Some experience needed and a reasonable level of digital competence. (See link: Tabliteracy)
Conversation leaders
Facilitate members in in formal conversation groups. No experience needed; ongoing training provided
Storytelling partners
Partner with clients in sharing, editing and co-writing biographical stories. Some PC and good writing skills needed; ongoing training provided. (See link: Intercultural Storytelling Project)
IT Officer
Look after our IT systems, setting up and updating devices and helping with our data and communication systems. Experience required.
Admin officer
Help keep track of our filing system, track population of centre. Some experience needed and good IT skills.
Outings coordinator
Create, organise and deliver outings and visits to places of social, cultural and historic value. No experience needed.
Arts Officer
Source, create, organise or coordinate artistic and cultural events at the Centre or in other settings. Some experience of the arts desired. (See example here: My Picture; My Story )
Communications officer
Deal with internal and external communications, emails etc and work with our social media. Some communications experience desired.
Cultural mediators
Candidates from diverse communities to act as intercultural communicators to help our members navigate the variety of social systems in Ireland. Some ability to interpret and a reasonable level of English required.
Fundraising and Marketting
Help ILS develop sustainability through research, development and application of new business strategies and financial models.
